By · Updated · 2 min read

Fable is a social reading app with book and TV clubs, tracking, streaks, stats, an ebook reader and personalized recommendations, according to its App Store listing. Bookstub is a private tracker with page logs, saved lines and ticket-style stubs. Bookstub is in development; this comparison is as of October 2026.

What is the main difference?

The two apps answer different questions. Fable asks whom you want to read with. Its listing describes thousands of free book and TV clubs, chapter rooms that avoid spoilers, a For You feed of friends' lists and a custom ebook reader with highlights, tabs and comments. Bookstub asks what you read and what you want to keep. It has no feed and no accounts.

Competitor facts were checked on October 10, 2026 against the US App Store listing. Apps change, so verify before you decide. Bookstub is made by the publisher of this site and is not on the App Store yet, so it has no rating and no listed price.

What does Fable do better?

It builds community and handles discovery. Clubs, buddy reads and spoiler-free rooms give a reason to finish a book, and its recommendation tool suggests the next one. It can also deliver ebooks and let you annotate them inside the app. The listing shows a 17+ content rating, which reflects its social features. If you want to talk about books with strangers who share your taste, Bookstub offers nothing comparable.

What does Bookstub do better?

It keeps reading private and light. A pact travels inside a link you send. Friends open it in the app and join, and nobody creates an account. There is no server syncing in the background, so friends see progress only when someone posts a pace stub, which carries pages and never your notes. Lines stay on the phone, and shared links never include line text.

Each finished book also prints a stub, a ticket set in type with the title, days, pages, your rating and your chosen line.

How do privacy and data differ?

Fable is a community product, so your profile, lists and reviews live on its service and are visible to the people you choose. Bookstub has no account and no server for your reading. Books, logs and lines stay on the iPhone. When you share, you send a link or an image, and the link carries book titles, ratings and page numbers but never notes or line text. The privacy policy describes the build as it stands.

What about getting started?

Fable asks you to join a community, and importing a Goodreads or Kindle list is part of how it personalizes recommendations, per its listing. Bookstub asks for nothing at first. The first stub prints during onboarding, before any account, permission or paywall: you pick the book you are reading, set your page and tear off the Admission stub. If you are between books, the first stub is a Library card showing your start date.

Who should pick which?

  • Choose Fable if you want clubs, recommendations and an ebook reader in one community app.
  • Choose Bookstub if you want to read with one or two friends on your own terms, with no profile and no feed.
  • You can use both: Fable for conversation, Bookstub for a private log and the keepsake stubs.
