Every finished book prints a stub

A Bookstub stub is a ticket for a book you finished: the title, author, number of days, pages, dates, a rating drawn as squares, a serial such as No. 007 / 2026, and one line you picked. You tear it off, then share it as a Story or a square image.

What is on a stub?

The stub is set in type, with no cover art. It carries the title and author, how many days the book took, its pages, start and finish dates, your rating from half a star up, colored tab flags along the top edge, and your line of the book, trimmed to fit.

A perforated tear zone holds a QR code. It encodes the same link as the share, so a friend who scans it lands in Bookstub or on the link page.

The rating shows as five squares, with halves, to match the catalog look of the rest of the app. Leave the rating empty and the squares are simply left off.

What happens when I finish a book?

On the finish screen you give a rating, pick up to five tabs for how it felt, choose a line from that book or type one, and press Print my stub. The stub slides out of a slot. With Reduce Motion turned on it fades in instead.

The stub stays editable in one way: you can change its design and paper after printing, even months later, as long as the design is one you have access to. Finished stubs also appear in the Stubs tab, stacked as slivers that show the ink and the title, and you tap one to expand it.

  1. Tap Finished it on the log sheet or the book page.
  2. Rate the book if you want to. A rating is optional.
  3. Choose tabs and a line of the book.
  4. Press Print my stub, then Share, Change design or Done.

What about books I stop reading?

Leaving a book is allowed and not treated as failure. You note where you stopped and, privately, why: Not now, Not for me, Too slow or I will come back. The stub reads Left the theater at the page where you quit.

How many designs are there?

Thirteen. Classic is free. Bookstub Pass adds twelve: Cinema, Train, Concert, Library card, Boarding pass, Receipt, Cloakroom, Admit one, Theater, Museum, Ferry and Night bus.

Paper stocks work the same way: two are free (Ink and Cream) and six come with Pass (Rose, Sky, Sage, Kraft, Night and Lilac).

Locked designs still show up in the carousel so you can see what you would get. Tapping one opens the Pass screen, which has a close button visible from the first moment and states the price and renewal terms as the App Store reports them.

Which milestones get a mention?

Your 10th, 25th, 50th and 100th stub carry a short note in the number, such as No. 010. Nothing else changes: there are no badges, confetti or random rewards.

Where do shared stubs go?

Share opens the iPhone share sheet with the image and a link. Save image adds the stub to Photos, and the app asks for add-only permission the first time you do that. Every shared artifact carries the Bookstub name, the link and a QR code.

What is the first stub?

The first stub prints during onboarding, before any account, permission or paywall. After you pick the book you are reading and set your page, an Admission stub slides out with the title, the page out of total, the percentage, today's date and the serial No. 001. You drag it up to tear it, which gives a small haptic tap, and you can share it or keep going.

If you are between books, the first stub is a Library card showing your start date instead. The sample book on the welcome screen is invented, so the app never shows a real title you did not choose.

Frequently asked questions

Do stubs show the book cover?

No. Bookstub never requests or shows covers. Each book gets an ink color, which you can change, and the stub is built from type.

Can I hide a book from the stub or stack?

You can hide books from monthly stacks and the year archive. Shares show only what you leave visible.

What does the QR code on a stub do?

It encodes the same link as the share. The data sits after the # sign, which browsers do not send to a server.

Is the stub free?

The Classic stub on Ink or Cream paper is free for every finished book. Pass adds more designs and papers.
