Log the page you reached

Bookstub logs reading by page number. Turn the wheel or tap minus one and plus one, press the button, and the percentage is calculated for you. A book can come from catalog search, a barcode scan or a form you fill by hand, and adding it by hand always works offline.

How do I log a page?

The log sheet shows the book, the page you are on out of the total, and a strip of page ticks. Set your page and press the magenta button. The sheet closes and a note appears with an Undo button for 10 seconds.

The percentage on the sheet comes from the page. If a book has 559 pages and you are on 212, it reads 38%. Change the total and every percentage recalculates, so a wrong page count from a catalog never leaves you with bad history.

Going backward is allowed. If you set a page lower than the last one you logged, the app asks whether you really mean to go back, and your earlier log stays.

  1. Tap the Log button in the tab bar, or press and hold a book on the shelf.
  2. Turn the page wheel, or tap minus one and plus one.
  3. Press Log. If you made a mistake, tap Undo within 10 seconds.

What if I forgot to log last night?

Until 12:00 local time you can choose For yesterday, and the log counts for the previous day. It is marked as filed late in the calendar. A reminder can nudge you at 08:30 when yesterday is empty and no rest day is saved. The rules sit in streaks and rest days.

How do I add a book?

There are three routes, and all of them end in the same record.

Search takes a title, an author or an ISBN, needs at least three letters, and asks Google Books by default. In Settings you can switch the catalog to Open Library. Results are cached on your iPhone for 30 days. No covers are fetched.

A book can be paused, which keeps its logs and marks it Paused on the shelf, and it can be left, which prints the Left stub described on the stubs page. A Want to read book stays in a separate list and counts toward nothing until you start it.

  • Scan the barcode on the back cover. The camera is requested only on that screen, after a short explanation, and nothing is recorded or saved.
  • Add by hand: a title (up to 120 characters), an author and a page count from 1 to 5000.
  • Add as Want to read, which creates no stub.

Can I time my sessions?

Yes. The timer is a full-screen clock that keeps counting from its start time, so locking the phone does not lose it. Stop and log opens the log sheet with the minutes attached. A session of at least one minute counts as a reading day, even if you did not note pages.

There is a switch for keeping the screen awake while the timer runs, and closing the timer while it is running asks whether to discard the session or keep timing, so an accidental swipe does not erase a long evening.

What if I listened to an audiobook or skipped counting pages?

Choose Read, did not count pages. The day counts toward your streak without changing the page. That keeps the streak honest for evenings when you read on a train and never glanced at a page number.

Is logging free?

Yes. Books, logs, the page wheel and the timer are unlimited and free. Bookstub Pass adds extras elsewhere, never to the basics of writing down a page.

What does the shelf show?

The shelf is the home screen. At the top are three boxes: the current page of your active book, your day streak, and your year goal, or the number of books so far if you set no goal. Below is a week strip with today marked, and a grid of record cards for books you are reading or have paused. A dashed Next read slot invites the next book.

Each card carries a catalog label such as A-01, the title, the percentage and the page out of total. Long press a card for a short menu: Log page, Start timer, Mark finished, Pause, Left it, or Edit.

Beneath the grid are your most recent stubs and a preview of this week's ledger, so the things the app produces are one tap away from the place where you log.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bookstub need internet to log a page?

No. Logging is local. Only catalog search and barcode lookup use the internet, and adding a book by hand works offline.

What if the catalog has the wrong page count?

Tap the total on the log sheet to fix it, or open Edit book. Page counts from catalogs can be off, and you can change any detail.

Can I read two books at once?

Yes. The Log button opens a picker sorted by the book you logged last.

Where does the barcode scan send the ISBN?

The ISBN goes from your iPhone straight to the catalog you chose, Google Books or Open Library. Bookstub has no server in between.
